ABOUT THE JOURNAL

 
 
Biologia, Bratislava is an international journal covering all fields of botany (Section Botany), zoology (Section Zoology) and cellular and molecular biology (Section Cellular an molecular biology).

Biologia accepts original research and theoretical papers, concise review articles, letters to editors. Short floristical notes can be accepted in Section Botany, if they deal with first records of plant species in Slovakia.

Biologia is a continuation of the journals: Prírodovedný zborník (vol. 1-5), Biologický zborník (vol. 6-7) Biológia, Bratislava (vol. 8-48).

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

 
 
Submission of manuscripts: Manuscripts should be in clear and concise English (correct language is the resposibility of the authors) and not exceed 15 pages including tables and illustrations. All parts of the manuscript should by type-written (font size 12), double-spaced on side of white paper 21 x 29.5, with margins of 3 cm. Pages should be numbered consecutively throughout the manuscript.

Please, submit manuscripts in triplicate (illustrations - one original, 2 copies), one set of photographs is required. Each manuscript should be accompanied with an IBM PC diskette 3.5". The formats MS Word, Word Perfect, T602 (or ASCII file) are acceptable. Note the software employed.

Manuscripts should be organized as follows:
Heading: Title (preferably short, use bold face), author(s) name(s) (full, surname in capetal letters), adress(es) (use italics), phone, fax and e-mail are recommended.
The abstract should not exceed 300 words; key words: not more than 7 words.
The standard order of sections should be: Introduction, Material and methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References.

Abbreviations, nomenclature, and symbols for units and measurements should conform to international recomendations. The use of SI units is required.
Taxonomic names: Generic and specific names must be cited completely (including author's abbreviation) once in each paper and should be typed in italics.
Tables: Should be typed on separate sheets or inserted in the text, numbered with Arabic numerals at the top and have a brief title. Footnotes should be indicated by superscripts and typed below the table. No vertical lines should be used. Each table must be referred to in the text as, e.g., Table 1 or (Tab. 1). The same data should not be given in both tables and figures.
Illustrations: Each figure, or group of figures should be planned to fit into the area of either one or two columns of text. The maximum finished size of a one-column and two-column illustration is 7 x 20 cm and 14.5 x 20 cm, respectively. Clear, technically perfect line drawings of laser prints are acceptable. Morphological illustrations should include a scale bar. Lettering should be of suitable size with capitals at least 1.8 mm in height after reduction for printing. The same size and font of lettering (preferably arial or sans serif) should be used for all figures of similar size in any one paper. Figures must be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals, each one must be referred to in the text as, e.g., Fig. 1, Figs 1-3. They should be self-explanatory. Legends must be typed on a separate page(s). Glossy photographs must be submitted in the actual size of reproduction, squared accurately and mounted on a white card. Colour plates can be published at the author's expense. Each illustration should carry on the reverse side the figure number, author's name and the first words of the article title.

Two or more references in parentheses should be arranged chronologically.
(b) Under References: arrange names of authors alphabetically and chronologically. Titles of papers must be given in the original language (English translation in square brackets can be added). Use the British Standard 2979 for transliteration of Cyrilis characters (in references and text as well). Abbreviations of periodicals should follow LAWRENCE, G. H. M. et al. 1968. Botanico-periodico-huntianum, Pittsburgh and its supplement (1991). (If you are not certain about the correct abbreviation, give the full name of the journal). The issue number should be given (in parentheses) only when volumes are not continuously paginated.

Proofs: Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author via e-mail as a PDF document (readable in Acrobat Reader). Proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available.
Offprints: The corresponding author will receive 30 reprints, one complimentary copy of the journal issue and PDF file of his/her publication.
Authors are ask for paying the carriage charge.
