Phylogeography, postglacial history and taxonomy of model groups of taxa in Europe
RPEU-0003-06
Duration: 2007–2009
Research and Development Support Agency, Bratislava, Slovak Republic
Objectives of the project, which aims to solve some phylogenetic and taxonomic problems of model groups of
plants and animals, are as follows: (1) Solve taxonomic problems in the genus Prosimulium as well as in the Simulium variegatum
group (Diptera: Simuliidae) using molecular and morphometrc approaches; (2) Morphological ang genetic analysis of
species of the genus Prosimulium and the Simulium variegatum group from the area of glacial refugia in the
West Palearct; (3) Analysis of the distribution areas of European species of the genus Prosimulium and the Simulium variegatum group and maps of recent
and potential distribution; (4) Phylogenetic and phylogeographic analysis of the arctic-alpine group Cardamine resedifolia and C. bellidifolia;
(5) Monograph of European Cardamine, printed and on-line; (6) World checklist of the genus Cardamine, printed and on-line.
Phylogenetic relationships and taxonomy of the Alyssum montanum - A. repens complex (Brassicaceae)
LPP-0085-06
Duration: 2006–2010
Research and Development Support Agency, Bratislava, Slovak Republic
The main aim of the proposed project is to address and resolve taxonomic questions and phylogenetic
relationships within Alyssum montanum (Brassicaceae), which includes several taxa and cytotypes distributed
in Europe. The project should clarify also relationships among A. montanum, A. repens and other species within the
widely conceived A. montanum – A. repens complex. Attention will be paid also to the origin of polyploids of this
complex, their single vs. multiple origins, and possible co-occurrence of different cytotypes in mixed populations. Several
taxa of this group are local endemics, often endangered due to the decrease of the number of localities and convenient
habitats. Detailed knowledge of their taxonomic status, distribution, evolution, etc. is a basic prerequisite for the
effective protection. The family Brassicaceae is important from both the economical and scientific points of view. Besides
many economically important species, it includes also a model species Arabidopsis thaliana and other taxa, which are
currently subject of intensive studies. The genus Alyssum definitely belongs to the less studied ones, in spite of the fact
that it comprises numerous species and occupies a wide distribution area.
