Investigation carried out at the Department of non-vascular plants is focused on diversity and taxonomy of algae,
cyanobacteria, lichenized and non-lichenized fungi and bryophytes of Slovakia by means of up-to-date biosystematic
approaches, which enables to solve fundamental taxonomical and evolutionary relations on species level with an impact on
evaluation of higher systematic units. The goal of the scientific activity is to collect and broaden knowledge of natural
riches (species diversity), variability, ecological requirements and chorology of selected groups of non-vascular organismi
of Carpathian-Pannonian region, preferably the best preserved areas of Slovakia (national parks, biosphere reserves).
Specimens collected for the purposes mentioned above are kept in
collection of non-vascular plants.
The outcomes of the research are presented in home and international scientific journals and periodicals and successively in
the series "Flóra Slovenska" (Flora of Slovakia). A portion of knowledge is significantly
applied in bioindication of environmental condition and quality, respectively, e.g. mapping studies, IAP and IEC indices,
accumulation of heavy metals in plants, phytoplancton monitoring.
