Their evolutionary relationships to morphologically similar taxa will be studied by nuclear and plastid DNA sequences and AFLP markers. Results of molecular study will form a base for taxonomic revision of both groups. AFLPs will allow us to test two models of disjunction P. alpicola subsp. ullepitschii (vicariancy or long distance dispersal) and will help explain formation (polytopic vs. monotopic) of populations composed of several cytotypes in P. sect. Alpicolinae. The period of D. subsect. Cneorum diversification will be estimated in order to either affirm or reject the hypothesis on the Tertiary origin of a stenoendemic D. arbuscula. The project will provide the first comprehensive molecular phylogenetic frame of the genus Daphne.
