Several volumes dealing with smaller families have been already published (Irvingiaceae, Stangeriaceae, Welwitschiaceae, Schisandraceae and Prioniaceae, for details see Brummitt et al. 2001) as well as considerably larger world-wide accounts of the families Juncaceae (Kirschner et al. 2002, in total 440 species of seven genera) and Chrysobalanaceae (Prance & Sothers, in total 530 species of eight genera) were either published or submitted publication. These volumes do not represent only a summary of the knowledge about a family or a group of genera which is at present at disposal, but based on the comparison of the world-wide material, they often bring a new view on their taxonomic treatment.

The family Brassicaceae belongs to the species-rich and economically important families. Therefore it is not surprising that the group of genera Cardamine, Cardaminopsis, Nasturtium, Rorippa and some others belonging to this family was approved by the Steering Committee of the Project in September 2000 as a potential next volume of the work Species Plantarum - Flora of the World, which should be progressively succeeded by elaboration of the whole family. As a basis for the monographic treatment of this group of taxa serve not only partial revisions of larger geographic areas (e.g., China: Al-Shehbaz et al. 2001, tropical eastern Africa: Jonsell 1982, Malaysia: Jonsell 1989, Europe: Tutin et al. 1993), area-restricted taxonomic studies, but also the most recent analyses of intergeneric and interspecific evolutionary relationships at the molecular level, which should be reflected in its taxonomic evaluation (Koch et al. 2001, Franzke et al. 1998, Lihová et al. 2000). Despite this accumulated knowledge, quite a lot of problems remain unresolved and when comparing material from differen distant regions, several others are supposed to appear.

Working on this particular volume of Species Plantarum - Flora of the World our working group focuses on the genus Cardamine in its world-wide area. We expect a wide international collaboration in preparation of this volume.
